Spa Dental's partnership with operation smile
At Spa Dental, we offer Invisalign Braces through MiSmile, the UK’s most trusted provider of the treatment. MiSmile and Spa Dental Clinic have partnered up with Operation Smile UK, to help improve the lives of children worldwide through offering Invisalign treatment.
Operation Smile is one of the oldest and largest volunteer-based organisations focused on helping children all over the world. They have performed hundreds of thousands of cleft lip and cleft palate safe surgeries as part of their mission to enhance children’s lives worldwide.
This partnership will help provide much-needed surgery and care to children who would otherwise go without treatment. Each operation costs around £150 and to help fund this we will give £3 for every new Invisalign Braces case started at our practice, and MiSmile will contribute another £4 on top of that.
What is a cleft lip or cleft palate, and how frequently do these conditions occur?
A cleft lip or palate is a birth defect that happens when the tissues that form the roof of the mouth (palate) and the lips do not join together properly. A cleft can involve the lip, palate, or both. Cleft conditions happen in about 1 out of every 500-750 births.
What causes cleft conditions, and can they be prevented?
Although the cause of cleft lip and palate is unknown, experts believe that a mix of environmental and genetic factors may be involved.
Researchers continue to investigate all of the genes involved in cleft development and the effects of these genes on the environment, in order to prevent clefts from occurring in the future.
What are the effects of a cleft condition on a child?
A cleft condition can cause a child significant problems. Some of the difficulties that can result from a cleft include eating and talking difficulties, as well as hearing loss and dental issues.
Is it possible to repair a cleft lip or a cleft palate?
A cleft palate can be repaired with surgery, which is often recommended between the ages of 12 and 18 months.
However, early surgical treatment is not always an option for many families in developing countries due to a lack of financial resources, qualified medical staff, and other reasons.
